Challenges

The global aerospace industry encompasses the development, production, and maintenance of aircraft, spacecraft, and defense systems. It includes both civil aviation and military applications, producing commercial airliners, private jets, drones, missiles, and satellites. Aerospace organizations have been among the earliest and most active adopters of systems engineering, applying it to projects from airliners to extra-planetary spacecrafts. These projects require long-term, multi-partner development of complex products and these products must function with high reliability in harsh and unforgiving environments. Savvy aerospace contractors and acquisition managers know that a Syndeia digital thread keeps them from the grave consequences of mission failure.

The role of Digital Threads

Aerospace organizations manage vast repositories of performance, physics, safety, and economic constraints; complex cyber-physical structures and behaviors; software components; workflow task requests; and KPIs with their verification test suites. The scale of these repositories is compounded by the fact that major aerospace endeavors—such as designing, producing, and maintaining a commercial passenger airplane or planning a Mars mission—often involve hundreds of independent yet collaborating companies.

In this complex environment, the digital thread plays a critical role in connecting and integrating these disparate repositories, ensuring that Program Office and Mission Assurance staff, including Deputy Program Managers and Systems Engineers, can rapidly access, trace, and analyze relevant data.

What is MBSE ?

Modern engineering uses computer models and systems engineering (SE) is following this pattern. The basis of Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) is that the system can be captured in a single unified computer model, a single source of truth from which all required SE views and artifacts can be generated. Good MBSE practices can reduce errors and ambiguity, shorten development times, and improve collaboration between disciplines.
